A door trim was inspected using 3D scanning to evaluate its dimensional and surface characteristics. The inspection covered selected geometric features, including circles, slots and rectangles, together with surface distance measurements. The scanned data was analysed using InnovMetric PolyWorks software to compare the measured features against their defined nominal values and tolerances.
Dimensional inspection is important especially in the automotive industry, where components must meet defined dimensional requirements to ensure proper fit, alignment and assembly. For formed components such as door trim, variations in feature size, position or surface location can affect the fit and appearance of the finished assembly.
3D scanning provides an efficient way to capture multiple features and surface areas in a single inspection, allowing dimensional deviations to be identified and components to be verified against their requirements during quality control or before assembly.
Measurement Requirements
The inspection was performed to verify selected dimensional features and surface locations against their specified nominal values and tolerances.
The inspection included measurements of:
- Feature diameters and positions
- Slot length, width and position
- Rectangular feature dimensions and position
- Selected surface distances
Measurement Setup
The door trim was scanned using Hexagon’s HYPERSCAN Ultra system. The resulting 3D scan data was analysed using InnovMetric PolyWorks Inspector.
Execution
The door trim was scanned to capture the required surfaces and features. The resulting 3D data was processed in PolyWorks Inspector, where the defined measurement controls were evaluated against their nominal values and specified tolerances. The inspection covered 50 dimensional and surface features.
Results and Benefits
All 50 features were successfully measured. The measurements included feature diameters, positions, slot dimensions and rectangular feature dimensions.
The inspection provided dimensional data across multiple features and surface locations, enabling the door trim to be evaluated against its defined requirements. The combination of HYPERSCAN Ultra 3D scanning and PolyWorks Inspector supports efficient inspection of multiple characteristics from a single 3D dataset.
3D scanning provides an efficient method for capturing and evaluating multiple features and surface locations within a single inspection workflow. Combined with inspection software, the resulting measurement data can be used to verify dimensional requirements, identify deviations and support quality control across a wide range of manufactured components.
