Industrial X-ray CT Inspection for Porosity Check of Automotive Component

Porosity in a manufactured component can create internal voids that may affect its structural integrity and sealing performance. For components containing fluid or pressure passages, it is important to determine whether internal voids are isolated or connected to form a continuous path through the component wall.

Industrial X-ray CT enables internal structures and voids to be visualised without cutting or disassembling the component. This allows porosity and potential leak paths to be evaluated non-destructively.

Measurement Requirements
The inspection was performed to check for internal porosity. No dimensional measurement or tolerance verification was required. The objective was to identify internal voids and determine whether they formed a continuous, interconnected path between the fluid chamber and the external surface of the component.

Measurement Setup
The inspection was performed using the Waygate Technologies Phoenix V|tome|x S240 industrial X-ray CT system at a tube voltage of 180kV. The reconstructed CT data was analysed using Volume Graphics software to evaluate the internal structure and identify porosity and potential void connectivity.

Execution
The component was scanned using X-ray CT to capture its internal and external structure. The reconstructed CT data was then analysed to identify internal voids and evaluate their connectivity.

Particular attention was given to whether individual voids were isolated or interconnected. The analysis evaluated whether the voids formed an unbroken path extending from the fluid chamber through the component wall to the dry exterior.

Results and Benefits
The CT analysis enabled internal voids and their connectivity to be visualised without damaging or disassembling the component.

The analysis helps distinguish between isolated porosity and interconnected voids that may form a continuous leak path. If a continuous path connects the fluid chamber to the external surface, fluid can escape through the component wall, potentially resulting in pressure loss or leakage during operation.

This non-destructive inspection provides a clear view of internal porosity and potential leak paths, supporting quality verification and helping identify internal defects that may not be detectable through external inspection alone.

Industrial X-ray CT inspection provides a non-destructive way to examine internal features and defects that cannot be easily accessed through conventional inspection methods. The resulting 3D CT data enables manufacturers to identify internal porosity, voids, cracks, and other defects, supporting quality verification, defect analysis, and process evaluation without damaging the component.
