Roughness & Contour Measurement of a Ball Bearing

Ball bearing are effective in reducing the frictional torque in rotary applications. However, proper surface finish and geometry has to be achieved in order to bring out its desired performance.

Applications of ball bearings:

  • Automotive: Jet engine shaft, steering column, wheels
  • Power Generation: Pumps, compressors, generators
  • Process Automation: F&B conveyors, slicers

Therefore, the roughness and profile of ball bearing are essential parameter controls which contribute to the efficiency of the applications. Surfcom NEX ensures that the parameters meet the requried specification of the ball bearing with accuracy and precision.

Roughness & Contour Measurement of a ball bearing

The roughness at Point A is measured to ensure that the texture is rough enough to retain lubrication and yet smooth enough to prevent cuts and scores on the bearing surface.

The contour at Point A is measured to ensure that the profile is neither too big nor too small to fit in the balls with sufficent force and pressure.

With one measurement operation, Surfcom NEX can provide the surface finish and geometry of the ball bearing with both measurement graphs displayed concurrently in the ACCTee software.

The Surfcom NEX allows surface finish and geometry to be measured together for faster inspection and production process improvement.

Apart from ball bearings, both surface texture and geometry are important controls for other parts' performance efficiency. Examples include engine valves, fuel injectors, air foils, etc.
