Industrial X-ray CT provides a non-destructive method for inspecting the internal and external characteristics of complex components. For older or difficult-to-access parts, XCT can reveal internal features, dimensional characteristics and potential defects without dismantling the component.
In this case, X-ray CT inspection was performed on 30 to 40-year-old motorcycle parts from a Yamaha Chappy to evaluate their internal structure and dimensional characteristics.
For older motorcycle components, internal conditions may not be visible through conventional visual inspection. X-ray CT allows the component to be examined in 3D, providing access to internal features and areas that may be difficult to measure using conventional contact methods.
The inspection can also support dimensional verification and defect analysis, helping to assess the condition of existing components and provide measurement data for further evaluation.
Measurement Requirements
The inspection was performed to evaluate the dimensional characteristics and internal condition of the motorcycle components using X-ray CT.
Measurement Setup
The inspection was performed using the Waygate Technologies’ V|tome|x S240 Microfocus X-ray Inspection System. The system was used to capture detailed X-ray images of the motorcycle components for internal and dimensional evaluation. The reconstructed X-ray CT data was analysed using Volume Graphics software for internal structure, dimensional and defect evaluation.
Execution
The motorcycle components were scanned using X-ray CT to capture their internal and external geometry. The reconstructed volume data was then used for coordinate measurement and internal defect analysis.
For the Body component, selected geometric features were evaluated, including coaxiality, position, parallelism, radius and diameter. For the Lower component, X-ray CT data was also analysed for porosity and inclusions, including indication size, volume and distribution.
Results and Benefits
The X-ray CT inspection provided detailed information on the dimensional characteristics and internal condition of the motorcycle components. Selected geometric features were evaluated for the Body component, while the Lower component was analysed for internal porosity and inclusions.
The results provided a non-destructive assessment of both the component geometry and internal condition, helping to identify dimensional deviations and internal indications for further evaluation.
The X-ray CT approach provides a non-destructive way to inspect complex or older components, combining internal visualisation, dimensional measurement and defect analysis within a single dataset.
Industrial X-ray CT inspection provides a comprehensive approach for evaluating complex components where both internal and external characteristics need to be assessed. By combining 3D visualisation, dimensional measurement and internal defect analysis, XCT can support condition assessment, dimensional verification, reverse engineering and failure investigation across a wide range of components.
